Erosion control blankets—also called rolled erosion control products (RECPs)—are biodegradable mats typically made from natural fibers like straw, coconut (coir), wood excelsior, or jute, sometimes reinforced with netting. These blankets are laid over seeded or bare soil on slopes, ditches, or construction sites to shield against raindrop impact, reduce surface runoff, and trap sediment. They foster vegetation establishment by retaining moisture, keeping seeds close to the soil, and moderating temperature—eventually decomposing to nourish the soil. Available in various longevity categories—from ultra short‑term (3 months) to extended (up to 36 months)—blankets are chosen based on factors like slope steepness, flow velocity, and desired dissipation timeframe. Proper installation is key: soil should be cleared and smoothed, blankets anchored in trenches at top and bottom, overlapped correctly, and frequently staked to ensure soil contact and prevent undermining. With correct setup and upkeep, erosion control blankets offer a cost-effective, eco-friendly solution to protect soil, promote vegetation, and prevent sediment runoff.
